Astronomical experts have identified the Ebro Delta and the southern regions of Lleida as the premier locations for observing the highly anticipated total solar eclipse in Catalonia on 12 August 2026.

Salvador Ribas, the manager of the Montsec Astronomical Park, confirmed the recommendation. He highlighted specific geographic and meteorological advantages that make these areas ideal for witnessing the celestial event.

Optimal Viewing Conditions for the Total Solar Eclipse

The total eclipse is scheduled to occur at approximately 20:30. This timing places the sun low on the horizon near sunset. Therefore, the choice of location is critical for visibility.

According to Ribas, the topography of the Ebro Delta offers a distinct advantage. “I think that probably the best place in Catalonia will be the area of the Ebro Delta because it is a very flat area,” he explained. The lack of mountains or significant vertical obstacles ensures an unobstructed view of the horizon as the sun descends.

Weather Statistics Favour Lleida for the Eclipse

While the coast offers flat terrain, the inland regions of southern Lleida present a different benefit: reliability. Ribas noted that while the duration of totality might be slightly shorter in some inland areas compared to the coast, the historical weather data is encouraging.

“The meteorological statistics are quite favourable, suggesting we have high chances of success in the lands of Lleida,” Ribas stated. Clear skies are essential for viewing the phenomenon. In addition, statistical models often show lower cloud cover risks in these inland zones during August.

Meanwhile, the guidance was provided as the Montsec Astronomical Park prepares for the 2026 season. This year is marked by significant astronomical interest across the Iberian Peninsula.
