A tourist has been hospitalised with serious injuries after falling from a construction crane in central Barcelona in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police believe a reckless, alcohol-fuelled act caused the incident in the city’s Eixample district.

The events unfolded at approximately 5:15 a.m. on Saturday, 7 March, at a construction site located at the intersection of Carrer del Comte d’Urgell and Avinguda de Francesc Macià, a stone’s throw from the iconic Avinguda Diagonal. A passing patrol of the Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police, spotted the Austrian national after he had climbed a 30-metre crane.

A Perilous Descent

According to a report from Metrópoli Abierta, officers at the scene immediately ordered the man to descend from the structure. He showed clear signs of severe intoxication, and his speech was reportedly incoherent. As he attempted to climb down, he lost his balance and plummeted approximately 10 metres to the ground below.

Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene. Paramedics from Catalonia’s Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) administered first aid. The man had sustained serious injuries and severe contusions across his body, with particularly significant trauma to his leg. After stabilisation at the scene, he was evacuated to a nearby hospital. Medical professionals confirmed his life is not in danger, despite the serious injuries.

The Mossos d’Esquadra have opened an official investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are investigating his motivations for scaling the crane at such an early hour. Construction cranes are a common sight in the densely populated Eixample district, which is constantly undergoing urban renewal.
