The events unfolded at approximately 5:15 a.m. on Saturday, 7 March, at a construction site located at the intersection of Carrer del Comte d’Urgell and Avinguda de Francesc Macià, a stone’s throw from the iconic Avinguda Diagonal. A passing patrol of the Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police, spotted the Austrian national after he had climbed a 30-metre crane.
A Perilous Descent
According to a report from Metrópoli Abierta, officers at the scene immediately ordered the man to descend from the structure. He showed clear signs of severe intoxication, and his speech was reportedly incoherent. As he attempted to climb down, he lost his balance and plummeted approximately 10 metres to the ground below.
Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene. Paramedics from Catalonia’s Sistema d’Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) administered first aid. The man had sustained serious injuries and severe contusions across his body, with particularly significant trauma to his leg. After stabilisation at the scene, he was evacuated to a nearby hospital. Medical professionals confirmed his life is not in danger, despite the serious injuries.
Investigation Underway in Eixample
The Mossos d’Esquadra have opened an official investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are investigating his motivations for scaling the crane at such an early hour. Construction cranes are a common sight in the densely populated Eixample district, which is constantly undergoing urban renewal. This area is a hub of residential life and commercial activity, with major projects like the redevelopment of the former La Model prison shaping its future.
The incident highlights persistent challenges Barcelona faces in managing tourism’s impact, particularly issues related to alcohol-fuelled misconduct. While the city’s vibrant nightlife and cultural offerings attract millions, this event serves as a stark reminder of potential tragedy. It also comes as the city grapples with broader urban liveability issues, from the changing face of major arteries like Avinguda Diagonal (where some businesses are relocating or closing) to the ongoing housing crisis. Many residents will view this incident as another example of tourism’s disruptive side in a neighbourhood that also cherishes its local character, embodied by institutions like the Veracruz Bar.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the tourist’s recovery and the questions raised by his dangerous late-night climb.
