Two oversized trucks completely blocked a major entrance to Barcelona’s Ronda de Dalt ring road for over seven hours overnight on Monday. Operating without the necessary legal authorisations, the vehicles became wedged on a slip road, causing a significant standstill.

The incident began at approximately 8:30 PM on Monday evening when the two large vehicles attempted to join the B-20 motorway, a critical artery for traffic in Barcelona. According to a statement from the Guardia Urbana de Barcelona, the drivers became stuck at entrance number 10, near the affluent district of Pedralbes, while heading towards the Llobregat river.
The blockage caused significant disruption, and traffic remained unable to pass until the vehicles were cleared at 4:15 AM on Tuesday morning. Barcelona’s ring roads are often congested, and although this incident occurred outside of peak hours, it highlights the network’s fragility. Such recurring issues have previously led to extensive queues following accidents and prompted dedicated traffic studies to address gridlock.
A Failure of Regulation and Awareness
Municipal sources, as reported by El Periódico, revealed the drivers’ unfamiliarity with the local terrain led them to attempt the ill-fated manoeuvre. However, the core issue remained a significant breach of transport regulations.
Due to their excessive mass and dimensions, these lorries required special transport authorisation. Under Catalan law, such vehicles must obtain specific permits from the Servei Català de Trànsit (Catalan Transit Service). This process involves planning a designated route to safely accommodate the vehicle’s size and weight, often restricting travel to specific times to minimise disruption.
Furthermore, vehicles of this nature typically require a police escort from the Guardia Urbana’s Central Traffic Unit to ensure safe passage through the city’s complex road system. The investigation found that the two trucks possessed neither the required permit nor the official escort.
After clearing the blockage, Guardia Urbana agents officially reported the drivers for the infractions and ordered both trucks to be immobilised pending further action.
Constant Pressure on City Infrastructure
The seven-hour standstill serves as a stark reminder of the constant pressure on Barcelona’s infrastructure. The Ajuntament de Barcelona has committed significant funds to maintaining these vital routes, including a recent €8.8 million investment package for the ring roads. However, incidents stemming from non-compliance or human error can quickly negate the benefits of such upgrades, causing chaos and economic disruption.
The Ronda de Dalt, or B-20, forms the northern and western part of the city’s main ring road system, channelling thousands of commercial and private vehicles daily. An unplanned closure of any part of this network, even for a short period, can have a domino effect across the metropolitan area. While this event was resolved before the morning rush hour, a similar incident during peak times could have paralysed the city.
Authorities have not yet commented on the specific origin or destination of the trucks, but the incident will likely lead to renewed calls for stricter enforcement of special transport regulations to prevent a recurrence.
