The figures, crafted by Barcelona artisans Pau Reig and Dolors Sants in collaboration with Manchester cultural groups, symbolise the city’s iconic worker bee – a historic emblem of unity, industry and resilience since the Industrial Revolution.

The presentation took place in the courtyard of Barcelona’s City Hall, attended by Manchester’s mayor Bev Craig, as well as local officials Jordi Valls and Xavier Marcé. Both cities highlighted the figures as symbols of cultural exchange and friendship.

As part of the festivities, Queen Bee and The Beast-Bee will appear in several major events of La Mercè:

  • Toc d’Inici (23 Sept, 20:00): Procession from Palau de la Virreina to City Hall.
  • Parade of Giants (24 Sept, 18:00): The famous family-friendly parade through central Barcelona.
  • Plantada i Passejada de Bèsties (26 Sept, 20:00): A relaxed, fire-free evening parade in El Born.
  • Correfoc (27 Sept, 20:30): The spectacular fire run with dragons, devils and beasts.

The inclusion of Manchester’s bees strengthens the cultural ties between the two cities while enriching Barcelona’s most cherished celebration.
