Barcelona Casserole Noodles Find New Champions
Two establishments leading this culinary revival are Fonda de Pirenaicas in Gràcia and Casa Fiero in Eixample. Consequently, these restaurants are bringing back dishes that had gradually disappeared from many family tables. Furthermore, they’re offering modern interpretations while respecting traditional foundations.

At Casa Fiero, the approach combines nostalgia with sophistication. The restaurant’s 1970s-inspired decor creates a welcoming atmosphere while chef Víctor Ródenas reimagines classic recipes. His casserole noodles feature an unexpected surf-and-turf combination of sausages, boneless chicken and cod.
The menu balances fixed classics with seasonal spontaneity. Traditional Russian salad with potato, egg and bonito shares space with grilled leeks and roasted almond escabeche. Additionally, the restaurant maintains a serious cocktail programme alongside its wine selection.
Traditional Techniques Meet Modern Tastes
Meanwhile, at Fonda de Pirenaicas, owner Miquel Puchol has created what he describes as “grandmother’s cooking” with contemporary appeal. His Barcelona casserole noodles arrive with Iberian pork rib, already deboned for easy eating. The intense flavour comes from a base of sautéed onion and tomato cooked in chicken broth.

Puchol admits the dish initially struggled for popularity but persistence paid off. “We decided to keep it on the menu until it caught on,” he explains. The restaurant’s commitment to Barcelona’s cultural heritage extends beyond food to the carefully preserved interior featuring original tiles and period details.
The dining room feels like a traditional fonda with marble tables, dark wood Thonet-style chairs and ceramic wall decorations. Even an original virgin statue and sundial remain in place, serving as guardians of the establishment’s history.
Both restaurants demonstrate how Barcelona’s culinary landscape continues to evolve while honouring its roots. They prove that traditional dishes can find new audiences when presented with care and creativity.
