Barcelona boasts Spain’s best university. The University of Barcelona (UB) climbed to 145th globally in the prestigious World University Rankings 2026 from Times Higher Education.

The British publication ranked over 2,000 institutions worldwide. Oxford University holds first place, followed by MIT and Princeton. However, UB’s achievement marks significant progress for Catalan higher education.

UB maintains its national lead ahead of Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) at 183rd position. Moreover, Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) follows closely at 187th globally.

Catalunya dominates Spanish rankings

Other Catalan universities also perform strongly. Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) rank in the 601-800 bracket. Meanwhile, UOC, Ramon Llull, Lleida (UdL), and Vic-Central sit in the 801-1000 range.

Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) and Universitat de Girona (UdG) both place in the 1001-2000 category.

Research excellence drives success

Times Higher Education particularly praised UB’s research quality. The university scored 88.5 points, ranking 140th globally in research. It excels in citations, excellence, influence, and investigative strength.

UB also shines in knowledge transfer, scoring 92.4 points. The institution performs well in patents and derived income. Furthermore, teaching metrics highlight strong PhD-to-staff ratios and international student mobility.
