Deputy Mayor for Economy, Housing, Finance and Tourism, Jordi Valls, has championed Barcelona’s status as “one of Europe and the world’s main biomedical capitals”. Speaking at the inauguration of Biospain 2025, he noted that the city concentrates 94% of Catalonia’s biomedical sector companies.

The 12th edition of Biospain is running at Fira de Barcelona’s Montjuic venue until 9th October. The event is organised by AseBio and Biocat in collaboration with Barcelona City Council. Valls explained that Barcelona creates a “virtuous circle” for the medical sector as a “city of science and research, with a very good public health system” that stimulates innovation, knowledge transfer, and attracts both companies and investment.

The deputy mayor highlighted the biomedical sector’s economic importance, representing nearly 8% of Catalonia’s GDP. The region is Spain’s leading exporter of health sector products. “Hosting this fair is an honour and a source of pride for the city,” Valls stated.

His intervention at Biospain 2025 reinforces Barcelona’s position as an international reference point for biomedical research and development. The concentration of companies, research institutions, and healthcare facilities creates an ecosystem that supports continued growth in this strategic sector for the city’s economy.
