District officials in Ciutat Vella started distributing information to all homes in the Gòtic, Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, and Barceloneta neighbourhoods. This explains how the new system operates and how to manage authorisations.

New Access Control System

Public transport, taxis, emergency services, and other public service vehicles retain access to the ascending lane. Additionally, residents registered in the Gòtic, Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, and Barceloneta neighbourhoods are authorised.

Vehicles requested by these residents also qualify for authorisation. Owners of parking spaces within these areas can also register their vehicles. The Ajuntament also permits people with reduced mobility who have a parking space in the zone.

Users of car parks and customers of local establishments also have access. This includes vehicle repair workshops, hotels, hostels, and guesthouses located in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera.

Urban goods distribution vehicles can access the area up to Antoni Maura square. This access is permitted from Monday to Saturday during specific hours: 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 16:00.

Renovation Project Context

These new traffic measures form part of the broader Via Laietana renovation project. The project aims to transform the street into a more pedestrian-friendly and sustainable urban space.

The renovation includes widening pavements to over four metres, adding a new cycle lane, and prioritising buses in both directions. This comprehensive upgrade seeks to improve urban mobility for the central Ciutat Vella district, a key area for residents and tourists alike.

Future of Urban Mobility

Residents can complete the registration process online, in person at citizen service offices, or by telephone on 010. The new system will enhance public transport efficiency and pedestrian safety along Via Laietana.

This initiative will contribute to Barcelona’s ongoing efforts to create a more sustainable and accessible city centre. It will improve the quality of life for the thousands of residents in the Ciutat Vella district.
