The municipal executive confirmed it will not permit new tourist use dwellings. The Local Housing Plan will regulate existing apartments, defining urban planning tools for specific zones.

Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) presented the motion. It received support from the current government, formed by the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya (PSC) and Comuns.

Metropolitan Housing Strategy

This move aligns Viladecans with other Barcelona metropolitan cities. L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Feliu, Cornellà, Esplugues, and Sant Adrià de Besòs have taken similar stances. Barcelona itself has also implemented comparable measures.

Badalona has additionally stated its intention to prohibit all tourist apartments. This city joins the broader metropolitan veto set for 2028.

Following Barcelona’s Lead

This strategy mirrors the roadmap proposed by Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni. It follows Decree Law 3/2023 of the Generalitat de Catalunya. This decree requires urban planning permits renewable every five years.

Consequently, this effectively leads to a ban on new licenses from 2028. This collective action by these municipalities underscores a growing regional effort. It aims to manage the impact of tourist accommodation on local housing markets.

Future Impact on Residents

Residents in Viladecans and neighbouring areas can expect a significant shift. The availability and regulation of tourist apartments will change in the coming years. This aims to prioritise residential housing needs over short-term rentals.
