Vilanova i la Geltrú is building 78 new social housing flats on municipal land, the first public housing project in the town since 2009. Mayor Juan Luis Ruiz and UTE TAU-BALEC president Miquel Àngel Pigem signed the land transfer agreement on Wednesday for three plots in the Llimonet I and II area.

The mayor explained that providing affordable housing is one of the council’s key commitments. He said they want to do everything possible within their powers to offer social housing in the town, which has gone without any new public housing developments for over 15 years.

Right now, the signing represents a major step in tackling the town’s need for affordable accommodation. Meanwhile, the transfer of municipal land enables the development of these protected housing units, which aim to meet existing demand from local residents.

The project marks a turning point for Vilanova, which hasn’t seen this type of housing construction since before the 2008 financial crisis. However, the new development should help address the ongoing housing shortage affecting residents looking for affordable options.
