Vox Sabadell protest leader Ignacio Garriga has vowed his party will not retreat from what he terms “Islamo-leftism” following violent clashes between supporters and antifascist groups.

Vox Sabadell Leader Defiant Amid Protest Violence
Garriga, Vox’s general secretary in Catalonia, declared his party would not be intimidated by “the stones of Islamists or the stones of the far left.” Furthermore, he emphasised they would not take “a single step back” from their position. The political leader made these statements after Monday’s confrontation between Vox supporters and antifascist collectives in the Barcelona municipality.
Meanwhile, antifascist groups greeted Garriga’s latest appearance with stones and eggs, criticising what they called his “racist political programme.” Consequently, tensions remain high in the diverse city, where foreign residents have increased significantly in recent years.
Garriga specifically lamented that 48 hours after the initial conflict, he hadn’t heard “a single condemnation” from other political groups. Therefore, he accused them of complicity in the stone-throwing incidents that targeted Vox demonstrators.
Arabic Classes Become Political Battleground
The protests originated from Vox’s objection to a local school offering Arabic language instruction. Garriga stated unequivocally: “Whoever wants Arabic language, Moroccan culture, halal menus, burkas or burkinis should go to Morocco or go to Algeria, but in Spain we’re not going to tolerate it.”
However, Joan Casas of Sabadell’s Antifascist Platform defended the Arabic classes as tools for inclusion. “Contrary to the far right’s lies, learning Arabic language and culture isn’t a threat,” he argued. “It’s a tool for inclusion, respect and mutual knowledge that enriches society.”
Additionally, members of the city’s Student Assembly expressed concern about Vox sharing video footage of a minor involved in Monday’s confrontation. They accused the party of making her a “target” for political gain rather than engaging in genuine debate about cultural diversity.
This incident reflects broader tensions in the region, where changing demographics and living patterns continue to shape political discourse. The Vox Sabadell protest therefore represents more than just a local dispute about education policy.
