Vueling has announced a significant reinforcement of its route between Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) and Madrid-Barajas (MAD). This decision steps in to provide reliable transport options amidst ongoing chaos in Catalonia’s rail network. The low-cost carrier will maintain increased frequencies until 28 March, extending coverage through the busy Easter period.

The decision comes as travellers face systematic delays and speed limitations on both the commuter Rodalies network and high-speed rail lines. Meanwhile, Vueling had previously reduced operations on this route due to fierce competition from the AVE train. However, current infrastructure issues have prompted a temporary revival of the air bridge.

Vueling Barcelona-Madrid flights: New Schedule

Starting in February, the airline will drastically increase capacity. Until recently, Vueling operated only two weekly flights from Monday to Friday and one on weekends. Under the new temporary schedule, the frequency will increase to:

  • Monday to Thursday: Four daily flights
  • Fridays: Two daily flights
  • Weekends: One daily flight on Saturday and Sunday

Support for Major Events

The reinforced schedule is also timed to support major international events hosted in Barcelona. During the Mobile World Congress (MWC), Vueling will expand its offer further to five daily flights. In addition, two extra connections are scheduled for Sunday, 1 March.

Additional capacity will also be available for the Goya Awards on 28 February and the Alimentària food fair. This event takes place from 23 to 26 March at the Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue.

Context of Rail Disruption

This operational shift highlights the severity of the current mobility issues in Catalonia. With rail services operating at reduced capacity, travellers have increasingly turned to metro, bus, and private car options. Therefore, by ramping up the Barcelona-Madrid connection, Vueling is positioning itself as a necessary alternative. Consequently, both business and leisure travellers affected by the instability of the Renfe corridor now have a reliable option.
