Plainclothes officers from the Guàrdia Urbana intercepted two individuals attempting a brazen Westfield Glòries theft on Monday. The pair were caught trying to leave a fashion retailer wearing the stolen merchandise beneath their own outfits.

Westfield Glòries theft thwarted by police

Officers patrolling the centre noticed the two suspects behaving suspiciously. Upon searching them, police discovered the pair had layered the stolen garments under their own clothing. According to a police statement, the recovered items were valued at over €550. The officers also found a pair of scissors on the suspects, which had been used to remove security alarms. Consequently, the stolen stock was immediately returned to the shop. This type of incident reflects a wider issue in the city. For example, studies have shown that one in four residents in the Barcelona metropolitan area was a victim of crime in 2024.

GPS tracking leads to backpack recovery

In a separate incident in the Ciutat Vella district, the Guàrdia Urbana successfully recovered a stolen backpack. On Tuesday, a victim reported the theft of their bag, which contained a laptop, AirPods, and cash. Crucially, the electronic devices inside had geolocation tracking enabled.

Using the tracking data, officers followed the signal, located the suspects, and detained three minors. Therefore, the backpack and its contents were successfully returned to the rightful owner. Tackling repeat offenders remains a key challenge for law enforcement. Meanwhile, regional crime data has shown that twelve individuals accounted for a staggering 475 arrests in a single year.
