On 24 September, Barcelona marks the feast day of Our Lady of Mercy, one of the city’s most important holidays. As it falls on a Wednesday this year, many residents are expected to stay in the city to enjoy the festivities or take a short day trip. For those needing last-minute shopping, however, finding an open supermarket may prove tricky.

The opening policies of the major chains vary depending on location and company policy. Some shops will remain closed all day, while others will open with reduced or special hours, especially in coastal or tourist areas where demand is high during the celebrations.
Mercadona will continue its policy of closing on Sundays and public holidays, meaning its stores across Barcelona will not open on 24 September. Branches in nearby towns including L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Sant Joan Despí, La Palma de Cervelló, Montcada i Reixac and Vallgorguina will also be closed.
Carrefour will keep most of its stores open, though exact hours depend on the type of shop and its location. Lidl supermarkets in Barcelona and surrounding towns where 24 September is a local holiday will remain shut. Consum stores will mostly close as well, but its franchise chain Charter will keep many outlets open.
Alcampo plans to operate the majority of its supermarkets and hypermarkets as normal. Dia shops, which often open on public holidays with shorter hours, will remain open on Wednesday with regular schedules. Caprabo will also keep some stores open with special timetables.
Beyond Barcelona, several other municipalities across Catalonia also treat 24 September as a holiday. Customers are advised to check the exact opening hours of local stores in advance.
