Police arrested a 19-year-old woman in Barcelona's Nou Barris district on 6 May, following a violent robbery against a 90-year-old man. The suspect allegedly stole jewellery valued at approximately €4,000 from his home, according to the Mossos d'Esquadra.
The incident occurred on 17 January. Two women approached the elderly man on Passeig de Fabra i Puig, a busy thoroughfare in the district, offering to walk him home. The victim accepted their offer. Hours later, the same women reportedly appeared at his residence, gained entry, and intimidated him before taking his jewellery. This type of crime raises significant safety concerns for vulnerable residents in the city.
Police Investigation Leads to Arrest
The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's police force, confirmed these details in a statement. Their investigation quickly identified both women involved in the robbery. However, the suspects realised they were under surveillance during a planned meeting with the victim and police investigators. They then fled the scene. Officers continued their inquiries, leading to the arrest of one of the women on 6 May. Police found a dozen pieces of jewellery in her possession, which they believe are linked to the robbery. The arrested woman appeared before a judge the following day, 7 May.
Search Continues for Second Suspect
Nou Barris, a northern district of Barcelona, is home to over 170,000 residents. Ensuring the safety of its elderly population remains a critical concern for local authorities and community groups. The Mossos d'Esquadra maintain an open investigation. They aim to fully clarify the case and determine the extent of the second identified woman's involvement. This ongoing police work seeks to bring all perpetrators to justice and enhance security for Barcelona's older residents.
