080 Barcelona Fashion, a Catalan government initiative promoting the region's fashion sector, has launched its 37th edition. The event takes place at a new venue, the Mirador del Port Vell, overlooking Barcelona's port. Running until Friday, April 17, it features 26 runway shows and marks a significant new stage for the annual showcase.
The opening runway presented Catalan brand Escorpion, which showcased a knitwear-driven collection in earthy tones, greens, and touches of red. Catalan business minister Miquel Sàmper highlighted the fashion sector's substantial economic weight during the official launch. He stated, "Anyone who says fashion is a small thing has no idea." The sector generates over €17.5 billion in turnover and employs 73,660 people across nearly 1,000 companies.
José Alberto Carbonell, president of the Port of Barcelona, noted that hosting the event at Port Vell reflects the port's vital role in the industry. He emphasised its contribution to the internationalisation of fashion brands through textile goods movement. Mr Carbonell added, "We are a key infrastructure for the fashion sector; every year we move thousands of containers with clothing and textile products." This move concludes several editions previously held at the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau. That location is a significant Modernist complex in the city.
New Venue Offers Unique Runway
Moisés Rodríguez, director of the Consortium for Trade, Craft, and Fashion of Catalonia, described the previous location as "iconic." However, he stressed that the new setting provides a unique runway "over the sea." This year's lineup includes returning brands such as Catalan Custo Barcelona and Simorra. Newcomers like Spanish Adolfo Domínguez also feature. Mexican designer Ricardo Seco joins the programme, replacing Luar.
Industry Innovation and Emerging Talent
The edition will conclude on Friday with presentations from emerging designers, including Eñaut and David Catalán. The programme also incorporates industry talks. These discussions focus on styling, creative direction, and innovation within the fashion sector. These discussions aim to foster growth and forward-thinking practices among professionals and students.
The shift to Port Vell and the diverse programme underscore 080 Barcelona Fashion's commitment to promoting both established and emerging talent. This solidifies Barcelona's position as a key hub for fashion and design in Europe.
