Discount supermarket chain Aldi will open eight new stores across Catalonia in 2026. This expansion includes a new location in Barcelona's Sant Martí district and a significant reopening in El Born. The first new store opens on 13 May in Montcada i Reixac.

The Montcada i Reixac store, located in Plaça d'Espanya, will span over 1,000 square metres. It features a car park with 71 spaces and will employ 17 staff members. This store will operate from Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 21:00.

Following this, Aldi plans to open a new supermarket in June on Carrer de Bac de Roda in Barcelona's Sant Martí district. Additionally, the company will reopen its store at Carrer del Comerç, 60, in El Born. This Born location, next to the old market cultural space, has been closed for reforms.

Aldi's Growing Presence in Catalonia

These initial investments will bring Aldi's total establishments in Catalonia to 110. The company expects to employ nearly 1,500 workers across the region. The first two inaugurations alone will increase Aldi's commercial network in Barcelona province to 78 stores.

Aldi's expansion plan means 22% of its total stores in Spain are now located in Catalonia. Over the last three years, the company increased its Catalan workforce by 18%, adding 270 new employees. By the end of 2025, Aldi had over 1,450 staff members in Catalonia.

Impact on Shoppers and Local Economy

This growth reflects in customer numbers. Recent company data shows over 1.4 million Catalan families shop at Aldi supermarkets. This means the chain serves almost half of all households in Catalonia. Aldi's business model focuses on discount pricing.

Its stores primarily feature own-brand products, which make up 90% of items for sale. For fresh foods, Aldi works with over 70 local suppliers. These suppliers provide more than 190 products. Notably, 24% of all firms supplying Aldi are Catalan.

Aldi anticipates continued growth as it opens more stores throughout 2026. This expansion provides more shopping options for residents seeking value. It also creates new job opportunities in the retail sector across Barcelona and Catalonia.
