Ametller Origen will open a new supermarket in Esplugues de Llobregat, on Avenida dels Països Catalans, 8-10, taking over the former Aldi site. The opening adds another food shop to the Barcelona metro area and strengthens the chain’s presence in the municipality.

The site was Aldi’s only store in Esplugues before it closed last month. Aldi did not give reasons for leaving when asked by Metrópoli Abierta. Ametller Origen already has another shop in the town, at Avenida Cornellà, 75, so this will be its second location in Esplugues.

The new store will sell fresh, dry and chilled products, plus prepared meals and sushi made on site. It will also have butcher and deli counters. The company, led by Josep Ametller, is preparing the premises for opening, although no date has been confirmed.

The location sits in one of Esplugues’ main business areas, next to a Mercadona and close to major company sites, including Nestlé, which has been there since 1976. Other firms nearby include Cobega, Coca-Cola, Bioiberica and Euromadi. The takeaway offer is likely to suit office workers in the area as well as local residents.

Avenida dels Països Catalans is one of the main entry points into Esplugues and a key route for people moving between the town and Barcelona. Ametller Origen says it had a turnover of €802 million in 2025, up 18% year on year, with store sales making up nearly 90% of that figure. It operates 147 stores across Catalonia and Andorra, around 50 of them in Barcelona city.

The company also says its Barcelona stores generated €713 million in 2025, up 19%, while its production centre in Olèrdola reached €36.9 million, also up 19%. Last year it opened new shops in Barcelona and Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, and it plans to open ten more stores this year. For more local business coverage, see our Community and Sport pages.
