Badalona City Council held an institutional tribute on Sunday morning in the Morera neighbourhood to honour the six victims of the 1974 Haissa knitwear factory fire. Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol called the annual commemoration "an act of justice" and stressed the need for dignified and safe labour conditions for everyone.

The ceremony took place at Plaça dels Treballadors de la Haissa, 52 years after the tragic incident on 17 May 1974. Five young female workers and one male worker died in the blaze. This annual event ensures the community remembers the lives lost and the lessons learned.

Mayor Albiol stated, "No matter how many tributes we can make, this will not erase the suffering of the people who worked at the factory, nor the suffering of the families for having lost those you loved." He added, "This act, besides being a remembrance of the victims, must also serve as a reason for reflection so that circumstances like those do not happen again."

Remembering the 1974 Haissa Tragedy

The fire completely destroyed the Haissa factory, a knitwear production facility. This catastrophic event starkly exposed the precarious labour conditions and severe lack of safety measures prevalent in industrial workplaces during that era. The City Council's institutional declaration was read by municipal groups, reinforcing the collective memory.

The tribute included speeches from several key figures. Mercè Cabrera, president of the Morera Neighbourhood Association, spoke about the local impact. Ángeles Lumbreras, representing the victims' families, shared their enduring pain. Following the speeches, attendees observed a minute of silence and laid a floral wreath, a traditional gesture of remembrance.

Calls for Improved Labour Safety

Mayor Albiol acknowledged significant societal progress in labour conditions and safety standards since 1974. However, he also noted that "it is also true that even now there are people who work in unacceptable labour conditions that need improvement." This statement highlights the ongoing relevance of the 1974 disaster and the continuous fight for workers' rights.

The Morera neighbourhood, where the factory once stood, holds this event as a poignant reminder of its industrial past. For residents of Badalona, a city of over 220,000 people in the Barcelona metropolitan area, the commemoration reinforces the importance of workplace safety. It also shows the community's commitment to honouring its history.

Ensuring Future Workplace Dignity

The annual tribute serves as a vital reminder for Badalona residents and the wider metropolitan area about the historical fight for workers' rights. It reinforces the commitment to ensuring all individuals have secure and respectful working environments moving forward. This ongoing reflection aims to prevent similar tragedies.
