A six-week-old baby, allegedly abused by parents, has been discharged from Vall d'Hebron Hospital in Barcelona. The infant spent nearly a month hospitalised for alleged physical and sexual abuse. The baby is now under the care of a foster family.

The Government of Catalonia assumed custody of the baby by court order. This followed the parents' arrest and placement in pre-trial detention. The parents face severe charges. These include continuous abuse, very serious injuries, and sexual assault. They appeared before the Barcelona Court of Instance for Violence against Children and Adolescents last Monday.

The baby initially entered Sant Pau Hospital on 16 March. The infant presented with a fractured femur. Medical staff at Sant Pau then activated the child abuse protocol. They urgently transferred the baby to Vall d'Hebron Hospital for specialised care. A witness had previously alerted authorities to the father's aggressive behaviour. This alert occurred at a Barcelona Primary Care Centre (CAP).

Early Medical History Reveals Red Flags

The Catalan police force, Mossos d'Esquadra, investigated the case. They found the baby had visited four different health centres in its first 1.5 months of life. During these medical visits, doctors detected various bruises on the infant. These included some in the genital area. Healthcare professionals initially misattributed these injuries to the placement of a urine catheter.

The situation escalated when the baby arrived at Sant Pau Hospital with the femur fracture. This prompted the urgent transfer to Vall d'Hebron. The mother of the baby works as a nurse in Traumatology at Vall d'Hebron Hospital. Police arrested the parents after an exhaustive medical review of the baby. The couple had been together for 16 years. They conceived the child through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) after a long search.

The baby is reportedly well and recovering. However, the infant will require periodic hospital check-ups for ongoing monitoring. The legal proceedings against the parents are continuing in Barcelona. This case highlights the critical role of medical professionals and public vigilance in protecting vulnerable children.
