Barcelona's culinary scene celebrates cod, a versatile fish featured in countless traditional and contemporary dishes across the city. Many restaurants offer exceptional cod preparations, drawing both local residents and international visitors. El Periódico Barcelona recently highlighted several top establishments where diners can enjoy this popular ingredient.
Historic Flavours and Market Gems
Can Fusté, a long-standing restaurant, will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2026. It serves around 600 people daily. Gerard Llopart, an engineer, now leads the establishment, following his father and grandfather. Their contemporary market cuisine includes a cod taco with sobrasada and a mild honey pilpil sauce. Gelida, located in the bustling La Boqueria market, has been run by the Domínguez family since 1973. Borja Domínguez now captains the restaurant. Their cod 'a la llauna' features a crispy batter and is served with beans, garlic, and parsley. Chef Carles Gaig provided tips for this popular dish years ago.
Cod 'a la Llauna' Across the City
Kiosko Universal also offers one of the city's best cod 'a la llauna'. Bar Joan, situated at the large counter of the Santa Caterina market, is another prime spot for this traditional dish. In Nou Barris, the small Bar Colomina, near the Mercè market entrance, serves stewed broad beans and cod 'a la llauna' for breakfast. This establishment has just five tables and a modest counter.
Unique Preparations and Neighbourhood Favourites
Bacaro, known for its informal service and fresh daily preparations, offers a distinctive cod 'mantecato'. Alfredo Rodolfi, one of the owners, describes their approach: "Informal service, no masks. Fresh produce. Daily preparations." They serve this dense, elastic cod between thin 'carasau' breads as a mini sandwich. Bodega Pàdua in El Farró provides a charming setting. Its walls are filled with hundreds of objects and memories, including a Seat 600. Diners can find various dishes there, including cod, snails, and 'capipota'.
Modern Twists and Iconic Settings
Bar Sant Josep, a key spot in the Putxet i el Farró neighbourhood, is famous for its hearty spoon and fork breakfasts. It maintains the same high standard for its daily lunch menu. Els 4 Gats, a modernist restaurant in the Gòtic district, has refined its menu. It now focuses on elevated Catalan recipes and moves away from a purely tourist-oriented approach. Bodega Manolo in Gràcia recently reopened after a brief pause. It serves onion-braised squid and a spectacular 'esqueixada', a traditional Catalan cod salad.
New Additions and Culinary Delights
Ot Salvans and Víctor Martínez opened Manda Huevos in Les Corts. While known for its potato omelette, the restaurant also offers a delicious cod brandade with tuna belly. Cal Boter, a restaurant with root cuisine, features marble tables and walls adorned with paintings. Here, guests can try the 'bacallà a la gratacolloni', a variation of the 'a la grandi collioni' recipe. It features cod topped with a mild 'allioli' mousseline. They serve it with potatoes, also under 'allioli' mousseline. Cal Ninot by Rosi, located opposite the Ninot market entrance, is highly popular. Its cod fritters are a highlight, and booking a table is recommended. Bar Iberia in Marina de Port has become an essential culinary destination. Francisco and Longinos Álvarez Castro took over the establishment a decade ago.
Enduring Appeal of Cod
Barcelona's diverse culinary landscape continues to celebrate cod in many forms. From traditional stews to creative tapas, the fish remains a beloved ingredient. These restaurants show the enduring appeal and versatility of cod, offering something for every palate across the city's vibrant neighbourhoods.
