Barcelona is in for an early spell of summer heat this weekend, with tropical nights expected in the city and temperatures reaching 35C in parts of Catalonia. The warm weather arrives about a month before the official start of summer.
The Catalan Meteorological Service (Meteocat) forecasts maximum temperatures of 34C to 35C today in Lleida and nearby areas, the interior of the Ebro Valley, and the western Pre-Pyrenees valleys. In Barcelona, the day should stay sunny, with some haze at times, and temperatures around 25C until late afternoon.
Night-time temperatures in Barcelona are also set to stay high, between 20C and 21C for much of Saturday night. That means the city is likely to see its first tropical nights of the year, when the temperature does not fall below 20C.
The warm spell is expected to continue into Sunday. Meteocat says Barcelona could reach 27C to 28C, with temperatures rising from midday and staying above 20C through Sunday night into Monday morning. They could still be around 23C before midnight.
There is also early warmth in the sea. Local broadcaster betevé reported that water temperatures at Barcelona's beaches had already reached 20C this week, which is earlier than usual for this time of year. That should make the city's coastline, including Barceloneta Beach, feel more like summer.
Across Catalonia, Saturday is expected to stay mostly clear, with low clouds and fog along the northern half of the coast and some high cloud bands in the western third of the region. Meteocat also says isolated, weak showers are possible in parts of the Pyrenees, especially in the eastern sector, during Saturday afternoon.
