Barcelona City Council has opened applications for its 2026 Children's Fund (0-16), a critical initiative allocating €15 million to support vulnerable families. Applications started on 13 May and will close on 22 June, offering financial aid to cover basic needs for children and adolescents aged 0 to 16 years.
Raquel Gil, Deputy Mayor for Social Rights, stated the funds aim to "alleviate the economic burdens of raising children for vulnerable families." This programme forms a key part of the Barcelona Child Poverty Strategy 2025-2030. The strategy acts as a roadmap, developed through joint efforts by the municipal government, many social organisations, and other administrations.
Supporting Vulnerable Families
The Children's Fund (0-16) contributes significantly to reducing child poverty across Barcelona. Data shows that 1 in 10 children and adolescents, specifically 8.7%, benefit from this support. Last year, the fund helped 14,345 families, including nearly 4,400 single-parent households, reaching a total of 24,292 minors.
Eligibility for the fund requires families to be active users of Social Services during 2025. Additionally, they must have children born on or after 1 January 2010. Applicants must also be registered as residents in Barcelona by 1 January 2025 and continue to reside there effectively until at least the application deadline. Finally, families must not exceed specific income thresholds set for the benefit.
Financial Aid Structure and Benefits
The financial aid amounts vary based on family size. Families with one child will receive €600. Those with two children are eligible for €1,050, while families with three children will get €1,350. For each additional child beyond the third, an extra €300 is provided. Single-parent families receive an additional one-off payment of €600.
In cases of shared custody, each parent who applies can receive up to 50% of the benefit amount. Beneficiaries of the Children's Fund (0-16) will receive their payments via the Barcelona Solidarity Card. If a family does not possess this card, the Office of Social and Economic Benefits (OPSE) will notify them to collect it. They will have two months to do so, starting from the day after the fund's approval resolution is published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Barcelona (BOPB).
Streamlined Application Process
Barcelona City Council, through the Municipal Institute of Social Services (IMSS), maintains a strong commitment to making communication about the Children's Fund (0-16) smoother for residents. The IMSS proactively contacts applicants and those who appear to meet the requirements by sending informative SMS messages. The fund's website, barcelona.cat/fonsinfancia, has also seen improvements in recent years. These updates aim to provide clearer, more accessible information and simplify the application and awarding process.
Sonia Fuertes, Commissioner for Social Action, highlighted the goal: "The challenge is ensuring all eligible families can access the Fund. For this reason, we have made a firm commitment to more direct, accessible communication, aimed at ensuring no child is left behind." The application process offers both digital and in-person options. Digitally, residents can submit applications through the Virtual Procedures Office (barcelona.cat/tramits) using idCAT Mòbil or other electronic certificates.
In-Person Support and Future Access
For those preferring in-person assistance, appointments can be booked by calling 010. Dedicated service points are available at the Office of Social and Economic Benefits (OPSE) on Carrer Aragó 344, located in the Eixample district. Another option is the Citizen Service Office (OAC) Monumental, situated on Carrer Sicília 216, also in Eixample. These locations offer direct support for the application process.
Additionally, the fund's website includes an improved virtual assistant. This digital tool operates in multiple languages and provides updated information on the benefit, its calendar, and the progress of applications. After the resolution is published in the BOPB, a search tool will become available on the fund's website. This will allow applicants to check the status of their benefit using their identification document. All information about the Children's Fund (0-16) is available on the official website.
