Soprano Adriana González recently led the third Concert for Peace at Barcelona's L'Auditori, a musical evening organised by the Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation with support from the Barcelona City Council. This event acted as a shared voice against war, promoting coexistence, solidarity, and human dignity.
Supporting Humanitarian Efforts
All proceeds from the concert will go entirely to the Red Cross of Catalonia's humanitarian projects. These initiatives provide crucial aid in conflict zones and offer financial support to war refugees residing in Catalonia. "In a context of so many wars, music is an instrument of cohesion and solidarity," stated Josep Quitet, President of the Red Cross in Catalonia.
Pedro Pardos conducted the Orchestra for Peace, which included the Victoria de los Ángeles Symphony Orchestra and musicians from other prominent groups, such as the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra (OBC). Daniel Mestre led the Choir for Peace, formed by Coral Càrmina and singers from various other local ensembles.
A Programme for Peace
Guatemalan soprano Adriana González performed altruistically, alongside soprano Ofelia Sala, mezzo-soprano Helena Ressurreiçao, Mexican tenor Eliazar Rodríguez, and British baritone Ashley Riches. The concert programme started with "The Song of the Birds" by Pau Casals, performed by cellist Mariona Camats. It continued with Mozart's "Exsultate jubilate" and "Requiem", honouring victims of various armed conflicts worldwide. L'Auditori, a major concert hall in Barcelona, regularly hosts classical music events and cultural performances, making it a fitting venue for this significant humanitarian concert.
Global Conflict Context
The Concert for Peace began in 2022 as a direct response to the conflict in Ukraine. Its purpose remains more relevant than ever today, given the current global situation. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reports over 130 armed conflicts globally. Well-known examples include those in Ukraine, Iran, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Last year, the event raised 61,000 euros, and organisers hope to exceed this figure with the third Concert for Peace.
The ongoing success of the Concert for Peace highlights Barcelona's commitment to humanitarian causes through cultural initiatives. It continues to offer vital support to those affected by global conflicts, both abroad and within Catalonia, reinforcing the city's dedication to peace and solidarity.
