Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni declared on Saturday, 9 May, that Europe must now defend citizens' right to remain in their neighbourhoods. He made this statement during Europe Day celebrations. The event took place at the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona, marking 40 years since Spain joined the European Union.

Mayor Collboni emphasised Barcelona's historical role in shaping the "Europe of cities." He stated, "While 40 years ago in Europe we defended the right to move freely, today Europe must defend the right to stay in our neighbourhoods." This focus includes ensuring access to housing, creating opportunities, and defending social cohesion.

The Mayor also referenced a significant €415 million agreement. This deal is between the Generalitat and the Ajuntament. It will rehabilitate 4,000 homes in the Besòs and Maresme areas, according to Official Europe Day information. This initiative directly addresses housing challenges faced by residents.

Celebrating 40 Years of EU Membership

The event at the Museu del Disseny auditorium saw many participants. These included Generalitat de Catalunya President Salvador Illa and Diputació de Barcelona President Lluïsa Moret. European Union and External Action Commissioner Jaume Duch also attended. Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi was present. This gathering concluded a week of commemorative activities.

These celebrations marked the 40th anniversary of Spain and Catalonia's accession to the European Union. The Ajuntament de Barcelona, the Generalitat, and other European institutions organised various events. These aimed to promote European values and connect citizens with the European project.

Barcelona's European Role

The city's commitment to Europe extends to its designation. Barcelona is the European Capital of Local Commerce 2026. This aligns with the ongoing Local Commerce Fair. The fair is held in Plaça de les Glòries from 8 to 10 May.

To further commemorate the anniversary, several iconic buildings across Barcelona were illuminated. These included the Palau de la Generalitat, the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the Palau de la Música, and the Torre Glòries. Additionally, over 1,200 banners were installed along the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes until 11 May. These banners displayed "More Europe. Barcelona." Many residents and visitors traversing this major artery saw them.

Barcelona continues to position itself as a key European city. Its leaders advocate for policies. These policies directly improve residents' quality of life. This is particularly true in areas like housing and community stability.
