Residents in Barcelona can now activate their new Digital National Identity Document (DNI digital) at six National Police stations across the city. This follows a recent Royal Decree that made the digital ID legally valid. The DNI digital functions under the same conditions as the physical document, providing a secure and convenient identification method on mobile phones.
This new digital identification became a valid legal identification earlier this month. The Royal Decree put the MiDNI application into effect, making the digital document fully recognised. Furthermore, all administrations and private entities must now feature QR readers for the Digital National Identity Document. This allows them to verify a person’s identity when required.
Activating Your Digital DNI in Barcelona
To obtain this digital documentation, individuals must first register on the MiDNI application. This process is achievable online via the MiDNI website. Users require their physical National Identity Document with valid certificates, the document’s PIN, and a mobile phone. Alternatively, residents can complete the process at dedicated Document Update Points (PAD). For this method, only a physical National Identity Document and a mobile phone are necessary.
Six National Police stations in Barcelona currently feature these essential Document Update Points. According to the ‘Dnielectrónico’ website, these locations are: * Carrer de Balmes, 192, in Sant Gervasi, Galvany. * Carrer d’Aiguablava, 55, in la Trinitat Nova. * Carrer Gran de Sant Andreu, 399, in Sant Andreu. * Rambla de Guipúscoa, 74-76, in Sant Martí de Provençals. * Carrer de Trafalgar, 4, in Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera. * Plaça d’Espanya, 1, in Sant Antoni.
Understanding Document Update Points (PAD)
These Document Update Points are specialised devices. According to the Ajuntament de Barberà del Vallès, “a PAD is a device integrated by a mini-PC, a touch screen, a keyboard, a fingerprint processing system and an integrated communications module.” These devices perform an initial identity check of the user. This verification occurs through card reading and fingerprint impressions. This system ensures secure activation and management of the digital identity.
Users can utilise a PAD for several functions. They can renew the digital certificate of their National Identity Document or change its access key. Additionally, individuals can now voluntarily and freely activate their Digital National Identity Document through these points. This offers Barcelona’s approximately 1.6 million residents a flexible and accessible way to manage their official identification. The introduction of the DNI digital simplifies daily interactions requiring proof of identity.
