A speeding driver illegally overtook a taxi on Balmes Street in Barcelona's Eixample district on Sunday, 10 May, just after 22:00. The driver ripped off the taxi's door before fleeing the scene. The taxi driver narrowly avoided serious injury during the reckless incident.

The incident occurred near the junction with Provença Street, in front of a hotel. The taxi had stopped on the right side of the road. Its driver was opening the door and preparing to exit the vehicle. The reckless car appeared suddenly from the right, travelling at a speed far exceeding the urban limit. It attempted to squeeze between the stationary taxi and another car, overtaking in a space barely wide enough for a motorbike.

Dangerous Overtake on Balmes Street

The collision was unavoidable. The impact completely destroyed half of the taxi's door. The taxi driver had one leg out on the road when the impact happened, miraculously escaping a potentially tragic outcome, ElCaso.com reported. Witnesses described the scene as "surreal" due to the suddenness and severity of the crash.

The driver responsible for the crash did not stop to check for injuries. Instead, they continued at full speed down Balmes Street. Pedestrians and bicycle delivery riders who witnessed the event immediately approached the taxi driver to offer help and check on his condition. This quick response from the public showed community concern.

Impact on Eixample Residents and Road Safety

Balmes Street is a major thoroughfare in the Dreta de l'Eixample, a central district known for its grid-like street plan and busy traffic. This area is home to approximately 260,000 residents and frequently used by tourists and commuters. Such reckless driving incidents raise concerns about road safety in densely populated urban areas, particularly for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.

Authorities have not yet reported any arrests in connection with the hit-and-run. However, if caught, the driver faces a significant financial penalty for the damage caused to the taxi. Additionally, they could face charges related to dangerous driving and fleeing the scene of an accident, which carry further legal repercussions under Spanish traffic law.

Ongoing Police Investigation

Police investigations will continue to identify the driver responsible for this incident. This event highlights the dangers of reckless driving on Barcelona's busy urban streets. It also shows the importance of adhering to traffic laws to ensure the safety of all road users in the city. Local authorities often remind drivers about speed limits and safe overtaking practices to prevent such occurrences.
