An 83-year-old woman has died after being hit by a vehicle in Barcelona's Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district, becoming the city's fifth traffic fatality this year. The incident occurred on Monday at the junction of Carrer de la Ciutat de Balaguer and Carrer de Sant Màrius.
Emergency services transported the woman to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries early on Tuesday morning. Officers from the Guàrdia Urbana's Central Traffic Accident Unit (UCAT) attended the scene to investigate the causes of the collision, alongside the Medical Emergency System (SEM).
This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety for vulnerable groups in Barcelona, particularly pedestrians. Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is a residential district known for its mix of quiet streets and busy thoroughfares.
Fifth Traffic Fatality This Year
The 83-year-old woman's death marks the fifth traffic fatality in Barcelona since the start of 2024. The first victim of the year was a 61-year-old cyclist, who died on 9 January after a collision with a car in the Eixample district, at the intersection of Carrer de Vilamarí and Carrer de la Diputació.
Subsequently, a 36-year-old motorcyclist died on 19 January following an accident on the Ronda del Litoral, which involved a lorry. On 21 February, a 25-year-old motorcyclist lost his life in a collision on Carrer de Nicaragua. The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but medical staff could not save him.
Previous Incidents Highlight Road Dangers
The fourth fatality this year was a 49-year-old motorcyclist, who died on 25 February. This accident, like the one on 19 January, also involved a lorry. These incidents underscore the dangers faced by motorcyclists on city roads.
The year 2025 concluded with eleven fatalities from traffic accidents in Barcelona, according to reports. These included five motorcyclists, five pedestrians, and one cyclist. These three groups, along with scooter users, are consistently identified as the most vulnerable road users. They account for the highest number of deaths in recent years.
Vulnerable Road Users Most Affected
The final victim of the year 2025 was a motorcyclist who died on 27 November after falling from his vehicle on Carrer de Farigola, in the Vallcarca neighbourhood of Gràcia. Among those who died that year were two minors, aged 11 and 14. The 11-year-old girl was hit by a Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) bus on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes in the Eixample. Meanwhile, the 14-year-old was struck on Gran Via de Carles III in Les Corts. Both tragic accidents occurred in November.
Continued Investigation and Safety Reviews
Authorities continue their investigation into the latest fatality. The city council regularly reviews road safety measures to protect all road users, especially those most at risk.
