Barcelona City Council has issued fines to six convenience stores. These businesses failed to correct food safety violations. The penalties follow a thorough inspection campaign across 34 local establishments. Inspections took place between February and April.
Inspectors initially visited 34 convenience stores across Barcelona. They imposed precautionary measures on 17 establishments. This was due to detected irregularities.
Fifteen stores had improperly conditioned bread baking areas. One store kept a high volume of unidentified products in an unconditioned zone. Another establishment lacked running water.
Six of the 17 stores received sanctioning files. They did not respect the precautionary measures. These businesses continued operations without fixing the identified problems. The remaining nine establishments had their precautionary measures lifted. They corrected the deficiencies. These stores now comply with current health regulations.
Imminent Health Risks Identified
Five convenience stores are currently undergoing further inspection. The Public Health and Environmental Control Service is conducting these checks. These stores presented an imminent risk to public health. Additionally, six of the inspected establishments operated without the required activity licence.
Why Convenience Stores Matter
Convenience stores are small, local retail shops. They are known for their extended operating hours. These shops often open for more than 18 hours daily or 365 days a year. They provide essential food, hygiene, and general merchandise products to residents. Ensuring their compliance with food safety standards is critical for consumer protection.
The City Council's ongoing efforts aim to uphold high food safety standards across Barcelona. This ensures residents can trust products purchased from local businesses. Further actions against non-compliant stores are expected as inspections continue.
