Barcelona is set for its first 30C temperatures of the year this weekend, with an anticyclonic block bringing warm air from North Africa across Catalonia. The change marks a clear shift towards summer-like weather in the city.
Temperatures are expected to edge close to 30C in Barcelona, with some parts of the province possibly going higher. According to Metrópoli Abierta, that is around eight degrees above the seasonal average for this time of year, and residents may feel a strong thermal sensation during the hottest part of the day.
The warm air mass is expected to build through the week. Monday, 19 May, saw pleasant temperatures of 20C to 21C across Barcelona, and forecasts point to rises of one to two degrees a day, with the peak likely on Friday or Saturday.
Coastal areas should stay cooler because of the sea breeze. The Mediterranean is still relatively cool for late May, with recent measurements near Barcelona showing surface temperatures of around 17C. Beaches such as Barceloneta and Bogatell are not expected to go much above 23C to 24C, while central Barcelona and areas near community green spaces such as Collserola could reach 28C to 29C.
Inland parts of Barcelona province are likely to see higher figures. Towns in Vallès, Anoia and Bages could reach 30C or 32C, while Lleida and nearby areas may climb to 33C or 34C. The warmer spell is expected to last for at least the next two weeks, with no significant rain forecast and dry conditions likely to continue.
