Barcelona is set to receive about €600 million from the new Generalitat budget, a package Mayor Jaume Collboni described as an important turning point for the city.
The Generalitat's Executive Council approved the 2026 budget project on Friday morning. It is the first budget approved under Generalitat President Salvador Illa, more than 18 months after his investiture, and it follows months of talks that secured support from Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) and Comuns. ERC had previously rejected the first 2026 draft.
Collboni said the funds will help guarantee medium and long-term investment, and argued they will help reverse years of underinvestment in Barcelona. He pointed to housing, public transport and public health as the main areas affected.
The package includes money for ten new Primary Healthcare Centres, a new elderly residence in Les Corts, and three new schools in the city. It also covers expansion work at Hospital del Mar in Ciutat Vella and at the National Art Museum of Catalonia in Montjuïc.
Transport is another major part of the plan, with funding set aside for the full tram link along Diagonal Avenue. On housing, Incasòl will continue building up to eleven developments, which should add about 637 flats, while 30 million euros is assigned to 1,500 homes the Barcelona City Council will build.
The budget also sets aside 207 million euros for city-specific policies under direct Generalitat responsibility, 29.5 million euros for municipal projects backed by the Catalan government, and 304 million euros for new investments. Those include cultural projects, the Diagonal tram connection and the Besòs-Maresme Neighbourhood Plan. For more Barcelona coverage, see our Community and Sport pages.
