The Catalan Meteorological Service (Meteocat) has issued a yellow alert for Barcelona, warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that could bring over 20 litres of precipitation per square metre in just 30 minutes. This warning for intense precipitation began on Tuesday at 14:00 and remains in effect until Wednesday at 20:00, impacting the city's coastal areas.

Heavy Rain and Thunderstorm Warnings

Meteocat has assigned a danger level of three out of six for these conditions, indicating a moderate risk. The sudden change in weather patterns stems from a "V"-shaped Jet Stream, or current in the upper atmosphere, crossing Catalonia. This specific configuration allows the air current to carry significant moisture. When combined with a cold thermal gradient, it generates widespread rain and strong, localised thunderstorms across the region.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) also issued alerts for Barcelona's coast. AEMET predicted thunderstorms for Tuesday at 12:00 and again at 19:00. These warnings highlight the potential for flash flooding and disruption to urban transport, particularly in low-lying areas. Residents should prepare for potential disruptions due to the intense downpours.

Barcelona's Week Ahead Weather Outlook

Forecasting spring weather often proves challenging, however current predictions suggest a meteorologically active week for Barcelona. Precipitation appears guaranteed, with the probability increasing towards the end of the week. Thursday and Friday are expected to see the highest chances of rain, potentially affecting outdoor plans and commutes.

Alongside this instability, temperatures will gradually decrease across the city. Thursday and Friday will likely be the coolest days, with maximum temperatures around 18 degrees Celsius. This drop follows Tuesday's mild start. The day began with clear skies, but cloud cover increased throughout Tuesday morning, bringing intermittent rainfall to many districts.

Staying Informed During Unstable Conditions

Tuesday, 12 May, saw maximum temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius and minimums of 14 degrees Celsius. Light winds from the southeast also blew across the city. Looking ahead, the upcoming weekend promises calmer weather. Forecasters expect good conditions and a recovery in temperatures.

As Barcelona navigates this period of unstable weather, residents should stay informed about local forecasts. Authorities advise caution, especially in coastal areas, as the heavy rain and thunderstorms could affect daily routines and outdoor activities.
