Barcelona City Council will invest €1.15 million to fully upgrade the green spaces in Plaça d'Àngel Pestaña, a central square in the Prosperitat neighbourhood of Nou Barris. This significant project will remodel existing flowerbeds and steps, plant new species, and install a more efficient irrigation system. Works are expected to start soon and finish by autumn.
The council's plan focuses on the 1,500 square metres of flowerbeds within the square's total area of over 9,300 square metres. This aims to create a more welcoming space for local residents. It also adapts the area to the increasing needs of climate change. The improvements will enhance the square's overall appearance and functionality.
Xavier Marcé, the Councillor for the Nou Barris district, highlighted the council's commitment to urban maintenance. "From the first moment, this government has made city maintenance a political and management priority," Marcé stated. "A better Barcelona also comes from looking after what we already have. With the Pla Endreça, we are strengthening this approach, acting constantly and with a plan on public spaces to make them cleaner, tidier, greener, and more welcoming."
Plaça d'Àngel Pestaña's History and Purpose
Plaça d'Àngel Pestaña opened in 1986. It serves as a key public space for the Prosperitat neighbourhood. The square borders Carrer Enric Casanovas, Carrer Sant Francesc Xavier, Carrer Santa Engràcia, and Carrer Argullós. Since its inauguration, the square has undergone several remodels. Specific actions to improve the area have taken place from 2011 onwards. This current project represents a full overhaul of its green infrastructure.
This investment forms part of the city's broader Pla Endreça initiative. This plan focuses on improving public spaces and urban services across Barcelona. It aims to enhance cleanliness, order, and green areas throughout the city. The upgrade of Plaça d'Àngel Pestaña directly contributes to these city-wide objectives.
Broader City Investment and Local Improvements
This project also falls under the Municipal Investment Plan 2025-2027. This ambitious plan allocates over €1.9 billion across Barcelona. It aims to ensure access to housing, offer new opportunities for residents, and effectively address climate change consequences. The green space upgrade in Plaça d'Àngel Pestaña exemplifies the plan's environmental goals.
Councillor Marcé further explained the local impact of these investments. "The improvement of Plaça d'Àngel Pestaña is a concrete example of this way of governing," he added. "These useful actions directly affect residents' daily lives. This transforms Barcelona from Nou Barris and continues to advance the improvements Prosperitat needs and deserves." The council prioritises projects that bring tangible benefits to local communities.
The Prosperitat neighbourhood has seen several municipal interventions during the current mandate. These projects aim to improve public spaces and resident comfort. For instance, a full renovation of Carrer Flor de Neu will see an investment of €3.17 million in the coming months. Additionally, a €2.3 million remodel of Carrer del Molí, which crosses the upper part of Carrer Flor de Neu, has already finished. These street improvements enhance connectivity and pedestrian areas.
New Cultural Centre for Prosperitat
The City Council recently approved plans for the Ideal Flor cultural centre and its associated park. These two new interventions have a planned budget of nearly €37.5 million. They respond to a long-standing demand from local residents for more public facilities. The new public facility will include a library, an auditorium, a gymnasium, and various community spaces. This extensive development will significantly enhance cultural and recreational options for the Prosperitat community. It represents a major boost for the neighbourhood's social infrastructure.
The upcoming improvements to Plaça d'Àngel Pestaña, alongside other significant investments in Prosperitat, demonstrate Barcelona City Council's ongoing commitment. These projects aim to enhance urban green spaces, improve neighbourhood infrastructure, and provide new community facilities for residents across the Nou Barris district. The council continues to focus on creating a more sustainable and liveable city for everyone.
