Police launched an operation on Thursday afternoon in central Barcelona. A man attacked another with a machete, causing significant leg injuries. He then barricaded himself in a squat. The incident occurred at midday on Carrer de la Diputació, at its junction with Carrer de Casanova.

The victim sustained serious leg wounds and was transported to a hospital for urgent medical treatment. El Periódico Barcelona reported the assailant was a man of Maghrebi origin. He then retreated into an occupied flat at the very same location. Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's police force, quickly deployed specialised units to the scene.

Police Intervention in Eixample

Officers from their Area of Resources Operatives (ARRO) prepared for a building entry. A dozen police officers participated in the intervention. They entered the dwelling to locate the suspect. This specific area, part of the Eixample district, is a busy urban zone. It is frequented by both local residents and international tourists. The presence of a large police contingent drew considerable attention from passers-by.

The incident marks another instance of knife violence in Barcelona's city centre. Such events raise concerns about public safety in densely populated urban areas. The Mossos d'Esquadra continue their efforts to ensure public order and safety following the violent assault.

Search for Suspect Continues

The police operation to apprehend the suspect was ongoing as of Thursday afternoon. Authorities have not yet confirmed if they successfully located or arrested the individual involved. Further information is pending, according to initial reports from El Periódico Barcelona. Residents in the vicinity were advised to avoid the immediate area. This was for their own safety during the police intervention.
