Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni called for the right to remain in one's neighbourhood during Europe Day celebrations, linking it to housing access and social cohesion. The city also marked its designation as the first European Capital of Local Commerce in 2026.

The celebration took place at the Museu del Disseny auditorium, attended by Mayor Collboni, Catalan President Salvador Illa, and other political figures. Mayor Collboni stated, "The Europe we defend is also the Europe of local and proximity commerce." He added, "Today, defending Europe means guaranteeing concrete rights: access to housing, generating opportunities, and defending social cohesion."

Collboni contrasted past and present European priorities. He noted, "While 40 years ago in Europe we defended the right to move freely, today Europe must defend the right to stay in our neighbourhoods." This statement resonates in Barcelona, where rising housing costs and tourist pressures impact long-term residents. The designation as European Capital of Local Commerce for 2026 highlights Barcelona's commitment to its neighbourhood shops and markets.

Citywide Celebrations

Organisers displayed a large European flag on the grass esplanade near the Museu del Disseny following the main event. Musicians performed the European anthem in Plaça de Santiago Pey. Additionally, until 11 May, 1,200 banners will line the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes.

Iconic Buildings to Light Up

From 21:00 this Saturday, several prominent Barcelona buildings will illuminate in blue. These include the façades of the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the Palau de la Generalitat, the Department of European Union and External Action headquarters, the Palau de la Música, and Torre Glòries. These illuminations symbolise Barcelona's strong connection to European values and institutions.

Barcelona's focus on housing rights and local commerce reflects broader European challenges. The city's role as European Capital of Local Commerce in 2026 will provide a platform to further these discussions and implement policies benefiting residents and small businesses.
