Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will install new generators across the Barcelona Metro network. This plan aims to prevent passengers from evacuating onto tracks during future power outages.

This initiative follows a power outage a year ago. That incident trapped 3,000 metro users in trains, forcing their evacuation onto the tracks. Laia Bonet, President of TMB, explained the new measures to journalists on Monday. She stated the generators will provide enough energy autonomy for stalled trains. This allows them to reach the nearest station.

Enhancing Network Resilience

Xavier Flores, TMB CEO, added further details. He confirmed one generator will operate at the Sagrera control centre before the end of this year. TMB plans to install more units next year. These additional generators are currently in the tender process. They will go into the Triangle Ferroviari depot.

The generators will also ensure essential systems function at stations. These include public address systems, internal communication, lifts, technical rooms, and lighting. This will maintain critical services even during a power failure.

New Trains with 'Last Mile' System

TMB will also equip all new trains with a “last mile” battery system. This system offers a self-contained power reserve. It allows trains to reach the nearest station independently. This mirrors the function of the new network generators. The combined approach significantly enhances operational safety and passenger comfort. It ensures that travellers can always disembark safely on a platform.

These upgrades represent a significant investment in the Barcelona Metro's infrastructure. They aim to improve reliability and passenger safety across the city’s extensive underground network. Residents and tourists rely heavily on the metro for daily travel.
