Works for the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) L8 line extension have closed a new section of Barcelona's Muntaner Street. The stretch between Marià Cubí and l'Avenir streets will remain shut to traffic until early 2027.
This closure allows for the excavation of an 80-metre deep emergency exit shaft, significantly impacting local residents and commuters. The works, which started this Monday, expand an existing traffic restriction that previously covered the stretch between Laforja and Marià Cubí streets.
The Generalitat announced that the intersection of Muntaner and Marià Cubí will remain open until late June. After this, it will also close to vehicles, though officials will maintain pedestrian access. This extensive closure requires large machinery and auxiliary elements. The emergency shaft will ultimately be 62 metres deep with a 9-metre diameter.
Mitigating Local Impact
The Departament de Territori is implementing several measures to reduce the impact on the neighbourhood. These include installing three-metre high acoustic screens, enhancing lighting, placing mirrors at necessary points, and providing clear signage to help access local businesses. This section of Muntaner Street runs through the Gràcia district, a densely populated area known for its lively community and local commerce.
Major Infrastructure Project Underway
The current works are part of a larger project to connect the Llobregat-Anoia and Vallès FGC lines via a new four-kilometre tunnel. This infrastructure upgrade will introduce new stations at Hospital Clínic, Francesc Macià, and Gràcia. Additionally, it involves the remodelling of the existing Plaça Espanya and Gràcia stations, aiming to improve connectivity across the city.
The total investment for this project exceeds 400 million euros. The European Investment Bank is financing 300 million euros of this through a loan. Officials expect the completed extension to benefit 19.5 million passengers annually, significantly improving public transport options for Barcelona's residents and visitors.
As works continue towards the 2027 completion, residents and commuters should plan alternative routes and stay informed about ongoing traffic changes. The project aims to deliver a more integrated and efficient public transport network for Barcelona.
