Barcelona City Council announced the pre-registration calendar for municipal nursery schools for the 2026-2027 academic year, introducing 145 new places for young children. Open days for the city's 106 municipal centres will run from 7 April to 5 May, offering families a chance to visit.
This expansion will increase the network's capacity to cover 71% of applications, up from the current 66%. Children must be over four months old by September 2026 to be eligible for a place in these programmes.
Families can attend in-person open days at the 106 municipal nursery schools across Barcelona. Some information sessions will also be available online, offering flexibility for parents seeking details.
New Places Boost City's Nursery Network
The city will gain 145 new places for the upcoming academic year. These additions come from two significant expansion projects. The future Escola Bressol Municipal (EBM) Tramuntana in the Sant Andreu district will provide 104 new spots. Sant Andreu is a large residential area in northern Barcelona. Meanwhile, the EBM la Mar in the Barceloneta neighbourhood will add 41 places. Barceloneta is a historic coastal area, popular with both residents and visitors.
Eixample School Offers Flexible Hours
Additionally, the EBM Germanetes, located in the central Eixample district, will offer two groups with diversified hours. The Eixample is a densely populated area known for its grid-patterned streets. These groups provide reduced schedules, either morning or afternoon, for children born in 2024 and 2025. Applications for these specific reduced-hour places follow a separate pre-registration process. This special application period runs from 4 May to 15 May. Full details are available on the school's website.
Interested families should consult the full calendar and specific school details on the Barcelona City Council website. This increased capacity aims to better meet the growing demand for early childhood education across Barcelona's diverse neighbourhoods.
