Barcelona will host Pope Leo XIV on 9 and 10 June, with the blessing of the Jesus Christ Tower at the Basílica de la Sagrada Família as the main event. The visit is part of his apostolic journey to Spain and is expected to draw wide attention to the city.
The programme begins on Tuesday, 9 June, with a stop at Barcelona Cathedral. The Pope will arrive from Madrid, enter through the main door, pray in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, pass through the central nave and the Gothic choir, and preside over Midday Prayer before visiting the crypt of Santa Eulàlia.
Later that day, he will lead a prayer vigil at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Organisers expect around 40,000 people. Doors will open at 16:00, with a pre-programme from 18:00 that includes music, testimonies, interviews and videos. The Pope is expected to arrive around 20:00, tour the track in the Popemobile, answer questions from three young people, and join a prayer and Gospel reading.
On Wednesday, 10 June, the visit turns to social and pastoral work. Pope Leo XIV will go to Brians 1 prison, then to the Monestir de Montserrat for the rosary and lunch with the Benedictine community. Back in Barcelona, he will meet social organisations at the Església de Sant Agustí in the Raval, where more than 90 groups will take part in a direct dialogue on poverty, addiction, migration, prisoner support and women’s trafficking.
The day will end at the Sagrada Família, where the Pope will bless the Jesus Christ Tower. Organisers say the visit is meant to combine public prayer, social outreach and a strong Barcelona identity, with references to Gaudí and the city woven through the programme. An alternative plan is in place in case of rain.
