Barcelona is set to host a vibrant array of cultural events this weekend, offering residents and visitors a packed schedule of film, electronic music, and cocktail festivals as the city embraces spring and anticipates the Sant Jordi celebration.
BCN Film Fest Celebrates Centenary
The 10th edition of the BCN Film Fest is currently underway, programming 90 films across venues including the Verdi Cinemas in the Gràcia district, the Ateneu Barcelonès, and the Filmoteca de Catalunya. This year's festival coincides with the centenary of the popular Verdi Cinemas, a significant cultural landmark in Gràcia known for its independent and international film screenings. The festival runs until Friday, 19 April, featuring notable projections and guest appearances.
Highlights include a screening of The Island of Amrum by director Fatih Akin on Saturday, 20 April, at 16:30, with Akin present at the Verdi Street venue. Damian Michieletto will also attend a screening of Spring on Sunday, 21 April, at 18:30. Additionally, acclaimed actor Willem Dafoe, starring in The Host, will be present for its projection this Friday, 19 April, at 21:30. To mark the Verdi Cinemas' centenary, a special screening of The Shipwrecked of Fate, a 1921 film originally shown at the venue 100 years ago, will take place on Saturday, 20 April, at 17:00.
Electronic Beats at Poble Espanyol
The Barcelona Electronic Music Association (AMEBA), an organisation founded over a decade ago in the Raval district to promote local electronic music, is hosting its second festival this weekend at the Poble Espanyol. Moving from its previous location at Cotxeres de Sants, the event will feature local DJs and artists in a larger setting. The main stage, located under a marquee at Poble Espanyol, a unique architectural museum village showcasing Spanish regional styles, will operate from 16:00 to 23:00 on Saturday, 20 April, and from 15:00 to 22:00 on Sunday, 21 April.
The festival showcases local talent such as Monocrom!, B1n0, Marc Piñol, and Sonic Wave Collective, who will blend electronic sounds with classical instruments. Attendees can expect a mix of melodic techno, ambient, and indie electronic music. For those wishing to extend the night, an outdoor club within the same complex, La Terrazza, will host DJs Arildo, Feder Zerdan, NiZ, and Basso Mata until 06:00. Full festival passes cost 41 euros, with single-day tickets available for 21 euros.
Indie Music and World-Class Cocktails
Meanwhile, the Monumental Club will host an "Indie Is Not Dead" party this Saturday, 20 April, at the former Monumental Bullring on Marina Street. This venue has become a popular open-air dance spot for themed events and nostalgic music. The party begins at 18:30 with a concert by Barcelona artist Joe Crepúsculo, known for hits like All This Energy and My Dance Factory. Following his performance, DJs Legoteque and Siamiss, regulars at the Razzmatazz club, will play tracks from bands such as Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Interpol, Sidonie, and Los Planetas. The event concludes at 23:00.
Additionally, the renowned Paradiso cocktail bar is bringing together ten of the world's best mixologists for a festival at the Palo Alto Market gardens this Saturday and Sunday, 20-21 April, from 12:00 to 21:00. This marks the fifth year that Barcelona's leading cultural creation centre transforms into a global hub for mixology. Participating bars include Alquímico from Cartagena, Lady Bee from Lima, Himkok from Oslo, and Locale Firenze from Florence. Food stalls, including Antonia’s burgers and Peruvian cuisine from Warike Project, will also be available at the popular creative and gastronomic space.
These diverse events highlight Barcelona's dynamic cultural landscape, offering a wide range of entertainment options for residents and tourists alike as the city moves into the spring season and prepares for the beloved Sant Jordi festival.
