Barcelona City Council has ordered Bodega Fermín, in Barceloneta, to remove its signs under the city’s rules on urban landscape uses. The ordinance sets limits on the size and type of commercial signage across Barcelona.
The bar has been part of Barceloneta for more than seven decades and is familiar to many locals as part of the neighbourhood street scene. It serves tapas, vermouth, wines and craft beer on tap, and is used by both residents and visitors.
The council’s rules are meant to keep a more consistent look across shopfronts and commercial premises in the city. In practice, they can affect older businesses that have kept the same exterior for years.
Barceloneta, a former fishing village and one of our Barcelona community stories, has around 15,000 residents and a strong mix of historic businesses. Cases like Bodega Fermín show the tension between city planning rules and the protection of local heritage in the city centre and by the sea.
Bodega Fermín will now have to make the required changes to its exterior to meet City Council rules. For more Barcelona neighbourhood coverage, see our community reporting and local updates.
