Catalonia is entering a warm weekend marked by spring-like temperatures more typical of late May than mid-April, according to Ara. Maximum temperatures will reach around 30 degrees Celsius between Ponent and the interior of the Ebre, with Friday already recording such highs locally in these regions.

Temperatures will remain above the seasonal average, but changeable weather is on the horizon. The arrival of cooler air at altitude will fuel more vigorous cloud development in mountain zones, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms intensifying. These conditions are already expected across the Pyrenees, Prepyrenees, and the Ports area today, with the pattern extending across Sunday and beyond in these zones.

Saturday brings warmth and early showers

Saturday morning will be relatively mild overall, with temperatures climbing further throughout the day, both minimum and maximum. The daytime environment will be distinctly warm, with many locations in the pre-coastal and inland areas reaching between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. Ponent and the Ebre interior could reach 30 degrees, whilst coastal areas will see temperatures limited by the influence of still-cool sea water.

Conditions on Saturday will begin with sunshine, with some morning mist or low clouds gradually dispersing. High, thin decorative cloud bands will pass through during the day. However, instability will increase as the afternoon progresses, with cloud development intensifying over mountain areas. Light showers or isolated thunderstorms are expected in the Pyrenees and western Prepyrenees, whilst the Ports area and interior regions between Castelló and Valencia cannot be ruled out.

Sunday to bring widespread thunderstorm activity

Instability will increase further on Sunday, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms spreading across the Pyrenees, Prepyrenees, and Ports area, locally accompanied by hail. Even the possibility of weaker, isolated showers in Ponent and central Catalonia cannot be discounted. Outside these mountain and interior zones, meteorological conditions will remain calm, though afternoon cloud bands arriving from mountain thunderstorm activity will still be visible.

Temperatures will remain stable or increase slightly, maintaining marked warmth with little morning cold. Some morning mist or low cloud will also persist in early hours.

Unsettled pattern continues into next week

Monday and Tuesday will see the afternoon shower and thunderstorm pattern repeat in mountain and interior zones, with this afternoon instability remaining through the week. Mid-week showers may reach coastal areas. Thermometers will experience some fluctuations, with declines where rainfall occurs, but values will remain above seasonal averages throughout Catalonia.
