Catalonia's Department of Education confirms it has received no formal requests to withdraw from a pilot programme placing plainclothes police officers in 14 educational centres. This statement comes despite public opposition from staff councils at four participating schools.
Sources from the department told ACN that no formal petitions have arrived from any of the 14 centres involved. However, staff councils at four institutes have publicly rejected the pilot and asked to be excluded.
Four Schools Oppose Police Presence
These include Institut Margarida Xirgu in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, a city in the Barcelona metropolitan area, according to Catalan Education Department official portal. The other three are Institut Jaume Callís, Institut la Plana, and Institut Comtat d'Osona, all located in Vic.
Pilot Scheme Details and Community Rejection
The pilot scheme involves plainclothes Mossos d'Esquadra agents present in schools, from primary to post-compulsory levels. Their role is to provide accompaniment and prevention services to students and staff. The educational community has largely rejected the plan since its announcement. The Department of Education previously assured that participation would be voluntary for all centres.
The discrepancy between public opposition and the lack of formal withdrawal requests highlights ongoing tensions. This situation raises questions about the future of the controversial programme and its implementation.
