Barcelona’s Eixample district has installed three new memory cobblestones for residents deported to Nazi concentration camps, adding to the city’s ongoing remembrance project.
The Eixample district says the plaques, known as Stolpersteine, are brass stones set into the pavement outside the last known home of each person. Each one includes the person’s name, birth year, deportation date and fate.
The three stones are part of Barcelona’s wider effort to remember victims of the Holocaust and other Nazi persecution. The city council has been placing these memorials across different districts as a way to keep these stories visible in public space.
Gunter Demnig started the original Stolpersteine project in Germany. It has since spread to more than 1,200 municipalities across Europe, linking Barcelona to a broader European network of historical memory.
The city council plans to keep installing more memory cobblestones in the coming months. For readers following local civic and heritage stories, see our Community coverage and Sport updates.
