Barcelona City Council has started work on a new 42 square metre water play area in the Eixample district. This refreshing space, located on Avinguda de Mistral, aims to provide a climate refuge for residents during the summer months. The project involves an investment of nearly 220,000 euros. It transforms an existing children's play space into a modern facility.
New Water Features for Residents
This new water play zone sits between Carrer Entença and Carrer Rocafort. It will feature an anti-slip concrete pavement with a slight incline and a central drainage system. This design ensures both safety and comfort for all users. The area will include various water games, such as jets, sprinklers, and dynamic structures. These are designed for safe enjoyment by children of different ages, prioritising smooth surfaces without level changes.
The water features will operate daily from June to September, during morning and afternoon periods. Users will activate them via pulsators. This system limits daily water consumption to a maximum of 10 cubic metres, promoting efficient water use across the city. According to the Ajuntament, this intervention will help mitigate the intense summer heat, which often affects the densely populated Eixample district.
Enhancing Public Spaces and Accessibility
Additionally, the project includes reorganising urban furniture around the new play area. The Ajuntament will install approved fences during the operational season to manage access and ensure safety. The project will also improve access points to the area. These measures aim to ensure coexistence with other uses of Avinguda de Mistral and enhance safety for both pedestrians and vehicles.
The Ajuntament designed the new space with universal accessibility in mind. This means people with functional diversity can use it, helping to create an an inclusive and high-quality public environment for everyone. This initiative aligns with Barcelona's broader strategy to improve public spaces and make them more adaptable to changing urban needs.
Barcelona's Growing Climate Refuge Network
This new refreshment area on Avinguda de Mistral joins Barcelona's expanding network of climate refuges. These spaces offer relief from high temperatures, particularly important in a city experiencing hotter summers. The Ajuntament continues to invest in such projects, advancing towards a Barcelona that is more resilient, healthier, and better prepared for future climate challenges. This commitment helps ensure the well-being of its residents and visitors alike.
