Endesa is investing €62.37 million in Barcelona's electricity grid this summer. The utility company is carrying out extensive renovation and reinforcement works across the city. These projects aim to prepare the network for future energy demands and improve service reliability.

Major Investment for Future Demand

The investment for 2026 is double the amount from six years ago, reaching a total of €62.37 million. This substantial funding supports 248 public works actions planned for completion by the end of 2026. These works include essential maintenance, network reinforcement, new connections, and significant digitalisation efforts. The upgrades are critical for managing peak summer demand, as air conditioning use significantly increases electricity consumption during hotter months. Additionally, these projects support the growing electrification of the economy and help integrate new renewable energy sources into the grid.

Strategic Works Avoid Tourist Hotspots

Marcos Lalueza, Endesa's Territorial Unit Manager for Barcelona, explained the company's strategic approach. He stated, "In areas like Ciutat Vella and El Born, we can no longer work in summer. We focus on other zones where citizens leave, where we will have less impact." This careful planning minimises disruption for both residents and the millions of tourists visiting Barcelona's busiest areas. Works will occur in all ten Barcelona districts. However, Endesa will concentrate efforts in Sant Martí, Nou Barris, Ciutat Vella, and Sants-Montjuïc, where residents are more likely to be away. These four districts will see the most significant activity throughout the summer period.

Montjuïc Upgrades and Digitalisation Drive

An example of these targeted upgrades is on Carrer de la Guàrdia Urbana in Montjuïc. Work here will continue until mid-July, focusing on a critical section of the network. Sergi Serramià, Endesa's Sants-Montjuïc district manager, confirmed its purpose. He said it will "improve the reliability and capacity of the network" in this important area. This specific project also addresses the increased electrical capacity needed for Fira de Barcelona, a major exhibition centre. The Fira itself is undergoing its own expansion works, requiring a stronger power supply. A major focus of Endesa's overall efforts is the digitalisation of the network. This involves installing advanced telecontrol systems and sensors. These tools collect real-time data and allow remote network operation, improving efficiency. Digitalisation helps speed up response times during outages. This ultimately reduces the duration of power cuts for residents and businesses across the city.

Continuous Reinforcement for Reliability

These summer works are part of a continuous reinforcement strategy by Endesa. The company aims to better prepare the entire system for periods of maximum demand, such as future heatwaves. The ongoing investment ensures Barcelona's electricity infrastructure can meet future challenges. It also supports the city's transition towards a more sustainable and electrified future.
