Fernando Carrera will represent the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC) as its mayoral candidate in Badalona for the 2027 municipal elections. The current First Secretary secured the nomination after becoming the sole aspirant to meet the party's endorsement requirements, El Periódico Barcelona reported.
Carrera, who also leads the socialist municipal group in the Badalona City Council, successfully gathered over 20% of the membership endorsements. This threshold is mandatory under the party's internal regulations.
Another contender, Aniceto Ramírez, did not achieve the necessary percentage of support. The endorsement collection period ended on Thursday, with the PSC Barcelonès Nord Federation's electoral authority verifying all documentation.
Candidacy Confirmation Process
The party's rules state that if only one aspirant meets the requirements, a local socialist group assembly must proclaim the candidacy. Following this, the proposal will go to the National Council of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia. The National Council will ratify Carrera's candidacy during its ordinary session scheduled for 13 June.
Carrera currently serves as a councillor in the Badalona City Council. He leads the municipal opposition. Additionally, he holds a position on the National Council of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia's board. He was elected First Secretary of the city's socialist group in September 2024.
Broader Party Election Calendar
This primary election process aligns with the internal calendar approved by the party leadership. This calendar designates lead candidates in municipalities with over 50,000 inhabitants. Within the Barcelonès Nord federation, the National Council will also ratify the mayoral candidacy for Tiana.
Meanwhile, local socialist groups in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Sant Adrià de Besòs, and Montgat will hold their own selection processes. These are expected in the coming months. Mireia González, the mayor of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, serves as the First Secretary of the federation.
Fernando Carrera's confirmed candidacy sets the stage for the Socialists' Party of Catalonia's campaign in Badalona. This move positions him as a key figure in the city's political future leading up to the 2027 elections.
