Fira de Barcelona and its institutional partners have secured a syndicated loan of up to €220 million this Thursday. This significant financing will fund the initial phase of remodelling the Montjuïc exhibition centre and complete the new 'Hall Zero' pavilion at the Gran Via venue. The investment aims to strengthen Barcelona's position as a leading global destination for major international events and business tourism.
The loan allocates €125 million to the Montjuïc venue, located prominently at Plaça Espanya. These funds will start the extensive renovation of its exhibition spaces. The remaining €95 million will ensure the completion of the 'Hall Zero' project at the Gran Via site. This new pavilion will allow major professional congresses, such as the Mobile World Congress (MWC) and Integrated Systems Europe (ISE), to expand their operations in the city. These events draw thousands of visitors and generate substantial economic activity for Barcelona.
Funding Major Exhibition Centre Upgrades
The Generalitat de Catalunya's Economy department confirmed the loan operation in a statement. Fira 2000, the company managing Fira de Barcelona, formalised the agreement with several financial institutions. These include BBVA, Banc Sabadell, CaixaBank, Banco Santander, and the Institut Català de Finances (ICF). All institutional partners of Fira 2000 previously approved the loan. These partners are the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the Ajuntament de L’Hospitalet, the Diputació de Barcelona, and the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona. This broad support shows the project's importance to the region.
The loan has a 20-year repayment period, which includes a four-year grace period. Its maximum interest rate will align with the financial prudence principle. The Spanish Ministry of Economy, Trade and Enterprise established this principle. This financing forms part of a broader collaboration agreement. The Generalitat and Fira 2000 shareholders signed this agreement, covering the period 2026-2029. This long-term plan ensures sustained investment in Fira's infrastructure.
Broader Investment in Fira's Future
This document outlines the financial contributions and investment timelines from all partners. It bases its structure on a financial plan designed to cover the Fira de Barcelona expansion. This includes the Gran Via venue and the first phase of Montjuïc's renovation. The overall project represents a total planned investment of €615 million. This substantial figure highlights the scale of the city's ambition for its exhibition facilities.
Specifically, the construction of Hall Zero at Gran Via requires a €365 million investment. This new space will add significant capacity for future events. The first phase of the Montjuïc remodelling will cost €250 million. This Montjuïc work includes rehabilitating the historic Alfons XIII pavilion. It also involves building a new multi-functional pavilion. These works must finish by the 100th anniversary of the 1929 International Exposition. This deadline highlights the historical significance of the Montjuïc site and its role in Barcelona's international profile.
Barcelona's Global Event Hub
These significant investments aim to modernise Fira de Barcelona's facilities. They will allow the city to attract even larger and more prestigious events. This strategic move reinforces Barcelona's standing as a premier global hub for business tourism and innovation. The upgrades will benefit local businesses, create jobs, and enhance the city's international reputation for hosting world-class congresses and trade shows.
