Barcelona's renowned Grec Festival will celebrate its 50th edition from 29 June to 31 July 2026, with the historic Teatre Grec on Montjuïc serving as the primary venue for live and performing arts. This milestone event cements the festival's status as a cornerstone of the city's cultural calendar.

The festival will open with a new production of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's "The Threepenny Opera", running from 29 June to 1 July. This highly anticipated show also marks the start of Teatre Lliure's 2026-2027 season, as both institutions commemorate 50 years of shared projects and artistic collaboration.

Festival director Leticia Martín Ruiz stated that the upcoming edition will "actively look to the past to understand why it is necessary to defend cultural spaces today." This perspective underscores the festival's commitment to cultural heritage and its future relevance.

A Half-Century of Arts in Barcelona

The Grec Festival, known for its diverse programme of music, theatre, dance, and circus, annually transforms various Barcelona venues into vibrant stages. Its long history reflects Barcelona's deep commitment to the arts and its role as a major European cultural hub. The festival consistently attracts both local residents and international visitors.

The opening production, "The Threepenny Opera", is directed by Marta Pazos. The cast features prominent actors including Nao Albet, Miriam Moukhles, Eduard Farelo, Marta Bernal, and Júlia Truyol. This collaboration highlights the strong artistic talent within Catalonia.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 Programme

While the Teatre Grec on Montjuïc will be the epicentre, the festival typically utilises numerous other theatres and cultural centres across Barcelona. Further details regarding the full programme and additional venues for the 50th Grec Festival are expected to be announced closer to the event.
