Barcelona's Grec Festival will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026 with a landmark edition featuring 99 performances across theatre, music, dance, and more. Over 197,000 tickets for the summer festival go on sale from 24 April.
Festival director Leticia Martín Ruiz stated the event aims to remember its history, founded in 1976, while projecting its future. She explained the programming is guided by "the invisible thread of contemporaneity, quality, and the search for unique languages."
Martín Ruiz also emphasised the festival's dual role. She said it will feature "classic creators and great international artists" but also serve as "the best window for local creation." She added, "The celebration and gathering of those who have been part of the Grec universe are the common thread of the anniversary."
Documenting a Half-Century of Art
To honour the Grec Festival's enduring legacy, organisers created "L'arxiu" (The Archive), a dedicated project documenting its 50-year history. This initiative aims to make historical materials and artistic journeys accessible, asserting the Grec's vital role as a space for artistic discovery and investigation. Martín Ruiz noted the desire to celebrate "a work that has permanence" given the intangible nature of performing arts.
As part of this commemorative effort, a documentary film about the Grec's history will premiere on 8 July. The film comprises four short features by acclaimed directors Sílvia Munt, Núria Giménez Lorang, Jaume Claret Muxart, and Marc Salicrú.
Special Collaborations and Opening Night
A unique collaboration marks both the Grec Festival's anniversary and the centenary of architect Antoni Gaudí. "Arrels de Llum" (Roots of Light), a special concert, will take place at the iconic Sagrada Família on 17 July. This unprecedented event highlights the festival's commitment to engaging with Barcelona's rich cultural heritage.
The 2026 edition of the Grec Festival Barcelona opens with "L'òpera de tres rals" (The Threepenny Opera). Marta Pazos directs this production, with musical direction by Dani Espasa and a cast led by Nao Albet. This highly anticipated performance sets the tone for a diverse and engaging programme.
International and Local Talent Showcased
The festival's extensive programme features prominent figures from the international contemporary scene. Calixto Bieito will present "La verdadera historia de Ricardo III" (The True History of Richard III) from Buenos Aires, offering a reinterpretation of Shakespeare's classic text. Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker brings her acclaimed dance production "Brel." Angélica Liddell, described as "one of contemporary theatre's most transgressive voices," will present "Seppuku."
The dance programme also includes "Inventions" by Mal Pelo, marking their return to the Grec after several years. In music, "Les flors prohibides" (The Forbidden Flowers) by Hidden Track Records is a charity event. It addresses ecological absence in Palestine, featuring artists Anna Andreu, Clara Peya, Ferran Palau, and Mar Pujol. Yerai Cortés will perform his show "Popular," while Raül Refree, Walid Ben Selim, and Vincent will present "Moon Ghazal (Love Poem)."
Extensive Partnerships Across Barcelona
The Grec Festival continues its tradition of co-productions, with nearly 40 planned this year. These collaborations bring together emerging and established talents with companies such as Lorena Nogal, Núria Guiu, and La Perla 29. The festival significantly strengthens its network of partnerships, involving 58 cultural venues and institutions across Barcelona.
These prominent locations include the Teatre Lliure, the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), and El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria. Other venues are the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), the Fundació Joan Miró, L'Auditori, the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, and Paral·lel 62. This extensive programme underscores the Grec Festival's enduring commitment to artistic excellence and its vital role in Barcelona's cultural landscape. It promises a memorable celebration for both long-time attendees and new audiences.
